Review of the book ‘Mom, me and mom’

I had read the book ‘I know why the caged bird sings’. It was hard to read because child abuse is so sad. When I saw the ‘Mom, Me and Mom’ tracking book, she intrigued me. I wanted to see how Maya Angelou’s life turned out as an adult.

I loved reading this book. Maya Angelou is a strong woman of character, but so was her mother. Though not perfect, she was redeemed in her own way. Maya’s mother explained to her children that when she was little, she and her father would not have been good parents and they chose to let her mother raise them because she would take good care of them. The times Maya’s parents tried to take over only confirmed the fact.

Maya’s mother came to be called Lady B. What she couldn’t give her daughter as a child, she made up for as an adult and they grew to love each other very much. Maya’s brother was noted for recovering from his childhood disappointments and battled with the heroine. However, Maya blossomed into adulthood.

Maya’s early adult life reflected her childhood struggle, but over time, with the support of her mother, she found her own path. Romantic relationships didn’t work out for Maya or her mother. Little by little, each woman found interests and talents that they were good at in life and began to take a different course to improve.

Lady B tried her luck at various races and became involved with women’s charitable groups. After her death, a park is named after her. What a beautiful way to leave this life.

Maya did not start her adult life as a star. She had very hard times. Before being discovered, she at one point took a job at a strip club because she needed to support her young son. Once she started exploring her talents, she even had to fight for respect while she was directing her first film. She called her mother for support. Once her mom joined her on set, everything was fine.

Maya never went to college, and yet she became a college professor. Not only honorary, but really educational. She became a woman loved by the world. Both she and her mother were simple girls with difficult beginnings who knew how to mend her relationship and each of them left her mark on this world.

If you ever thought your life didn’t matter, let this story encourage you to think that you can make a difference.
