Difference Between Custom and Premade Frames

There is a song or adage that says “A picture is worth a thousand words”. Some people even frame these print images for display and thoughtful purposes. But how do you choose the best framework for it? Should you go for the ready-made ones or make a custom frame? Before you decide which framework to choose, you must first understand the difference between the two. It may seem obvious, but there is actually more to this notion than meets the eye. For example, having the right frame to proudly display your image saves you time and money.

Pre-Made Versus Custom-Made Frames

Factory built and assembled for direct and immediate use is the apt description for a ready-to-use frame. These are packaged similarly and according to the manufacturer. They usually come with pre-made glass covers, built-in framing hardware, and backing. Such a frame can be placed on a table or attached to a wall and is usually made in different standard sizes. If you want this type of frame, they can be purchased at almost all frame retailers and photography stores. Since they are already pre-made, they are conveniently used right away.

Custom picture frames, on the other hand, are specially and specifically manufactured to the needs and specifications of the client. These frames are usually made to frame artwork such as oil paintings, watercolor artwork, and one-of-a-kind photographs and paintings. With a custom frame, you can choose the type of molding you want for your frame. You can also have it made to the dimensions you need and all the other things you want for your photo frame.

Since the framer is the one who makes their frames, they are often seen by the public as still a ready-to-use frame, which is not true. A custom-made frame is actually more expensive than standard “bought off the shelf” frames.

Protective Covers + Additional Accessories for your frame and artwork

The type of cover to protect your art and frame depends on your needs and the advice of your framer. Glass, acrylic and UV protective surfaces can be used as protective coatings. You can also ask your framer to place your picture or art in the frame so it can be easily hung or placed once you have it.

When are custom-made mounts more beneficial than pre-made ones?

Having a custom frame are the main options if you want a frame that best suits your artwork. Most of these have a variety of measurements to accommodate different types of images and artwork. This option also allows you to choose the right one that matches well and shows your art to the fullest. The only disadvantage of this option is charging extra time and budget to have them. But a much-displayed piece of art justifies what you’ve spent on it.
