What are the qualities of a good motorcycle exhaust system?

Have you ever ridden a motorcycle that left the entire neighborhood looking at you and cursing at the noise the exhaust system made? It must have been very embarrassing for you. This is what makes a low performance exhaust. It emits an annoying sound that can cause all motorists to leave the road thinking that it is an extremely large train using the road instead of the railway tracks. Annoying sound is just one of the many downsides that come with a poor motorcycle exhaust system.

So, the big question arises; What constitutes a good motorcycle exhaust system?

There are requirements that a good system must meet. These include;

high performance

Performance is the most important consideration whenever you are purchasing any part for your motorcycle. This is no exception when it comes to the purchase of an exhaust system. You need a high-performance exhaust that will make you a proud driver and give you the service you expect. It should have a high performance in terms of functionalities like speed, fuel consumption, among others. Some touring motorcycle exhausts will result in excessive fuel consumption by your motorcycle, while others will reduce its functionality and give you very poor performance. All these faults render the entire motorcycle useless. That’s why performance always comes first before anything else.

proper airflow

A good exhaust system must allow a sufficient exit of gases. The size of the pipe determines how well or poorly the gases flow. An exhaust pipe that is too small will cause built-in pressure as the gases try to get out. This, in turn, causes the pipe to become blocked, reducing the overall performance of the motorcycle. On the other hand, a pipe that is too wide results in an outgassing at an extremely high rate than assumed. This also reduces the performance of the bike. Therefore, the system size of touring motorcycles must be correct; neither too wide nor too small.

Easy and cheap maintenance

You do not need a motorcycle that will occupy most of your resources in its maintenance. A motorcycle exhaust system that requires your mechanic to check it too often is no good. A good system is one that you can repair yourself cheaply and take to the mechanic only when he feels he has a technical problem. So if you have been visiting the mechanic too often, yours is not a quality one. The key is; an exhaust system should be easy and cheap to maintain.

Different motorcycles are manufactured in different ways and to various specifications. This means that the parts of a motorcycle are not one hundred percent compatible with another motorcycle. So, buy an exhaust system because it is compatible with your type of motorcycle and not because you have seen it on another motorcycle. Otherwise, your bike could be at risk of poor performance. If you’re not sure of the right exhaust for your bike, it’s always good to check with your mechanic or manufacturer.

The above items qualify an exhaust pipe to be called a good exhaust system. Good luck on your next purchase!
