US Army FAQ: What should I bring with me to Basic Training?

A common question that future soldiers ask is “What should I bring with me to basic training?” It’s an issue that worries those who embark for basic training and fear getting in trouble for bringing contraband into the base. To alleviate your doubts and frustrations, I will explain what items you can take with you to the training camp.

Clothing

If you have read the official packing list on the goarmy.com site, you will see that they require you to bring an extra set of clothing. To be honest, you will be given new uniforms upon arrival at reception on the first day and will wear them until graduation day. However, it is recommended that you wear the clothes you are wearing and a comfortable pair of tennis shoes.

documents

All you need are the original certified documents that you have given to your recruiter. Those documents would be your birth certificate, social security card, certificates, identification card, marriage license, divorce decree, spouse and children documents and they also have your direct deposit form. You or your recruiter will prepare your personal information in a manila folder for you to submit to the receiving battalion at BCT.

Technology

You are welcome to bring your electronic devices to training camp, such as an iPod, iPad, laptop, mp3 player, and digital camera, but please expect those items to be locked away. Only your cell phone is the authorized item to have and your drill sergeants will return it to you from time to time as you earn privileges.

Miscellaneous

  • Small backpack that has neutral colors.
  • An inexpensive black wristwatch.
  • A phone card to make calls using the phone booth. Only if you decide not to bring your cell phone.
  • Adress book.
  • Stationery material such as notebook, pen, envelopes and also postage stamps.

Personal hygiene

If you think you may easily get dirty or smelly during your trip. It is recommended to bring a miniature hygiene kit that is acceptable according to airline policies. You will find that you would have the most basic items such as a deodorant, a toothbrush, toothpaste, a comb, a razor, and shaving cream as well.

Money

Nothing is free in basic training except food, uniforms, laundry and also housing. Otherwise you have to pay for toiletries and also haircuts which cost $7 dollars. To access your funds, you will need to bring your debit card to withdraw money from your account. They have ATMs located near the Post Exchange (PX) store so you can withdraw twenties.
