Types of bathtubs

A bathtub is a bathtub. Or is that it? Sure, they all allow you to come in and relax, they all have a water feature, and they all share a common purpose, but, as with most things, there are different styles of bathtubs. Which one is right for your new bathroom?

A freestanding bathtub has an air of antiquity about it. They may or may not have claw feet, which only adds to their charm, and they look heavy and sturdy, just what you need for a nice long soak. What makes freestanding bathtubs different is that they are not surrounded by walls. They are freestanding, which means that if you have your heart set on this type of bathtub, you need to make sure you have enough space in the bathroom for it. It gives you freedom, it gives you grace, and it gives you exposed plumbing that you can beautify at will.

The alcove bathtub is the one we see the most. It is the easiest option and usually the most economical, since it allows your bathtub to be placed between three walls. If you choose to tile or get a tub surround, you can also easily have a tub/shower combo that is ideal for every member of the family. Yes, they look utilitarian, but they get the job done, they’re clean, and the plumbing is hidden from view.

The combination of the alcove and the freestanding bathtub design is the downfall. This type of bathtub is freestanding but in a box-like cover that covers it on all sides. The bathtub is dropped into the box and voila, you have your bathtub. You will need a lot of floor space for this type of tub, but the finished product is very easy on the eyes and of course functional. Again, you can hide all the plumbing pieces in the deck for a seamless look.

If you want your bathroom to reflect a luxurious spa, you’ll want to go crazy and get a corner tub. These triangle affairs offer bathing for more than one person at a time and are usually thrown in to add to the look of luxury. Yes, they take up a lot of floor space and yes, they take a long time to fill up, but who cares? Once you’re inside, you won’t think about any of it anyway.

So what will be for your next reindeer bath?
