Reading – Teaching a child to read is not rocket science

Teaching a baby to read is not rocket science. There is no mystery, special techniques or special methods required; no special equipment or reading ‘scheme’ is required. There is no method like phonics or whole word methods that is more effective than another.

Reading schemes and trendy methods that come in and out of style are there to make money for writers and proponents of the method and to make life easier for teachers. They are not for the benefit of the young reader who needs time and personalized input from an adult who can read and knows what to do to help and encourage the burgeoning reader.

What is needed is a combination of all the different ways and methods that everyone has apart and that responds to the individual learning style and preferences of the child. Who better to do this than a loving parent who knows the child better than anyone.

Teach the baby to read. It’s the best bonding experience possible. What’s better than snuggling up with your child with a book to share and enjoy together? Even the youngest baby will respond to the sound of her voice and her brain will be stimulated and ‘primed’ to receive the language that is essential for successful reading.

It is also the best gift you can give your child. It will give them an essential skill. It will equip them for a successful future and to take their place in the world as literate adults.

So relax, take your time and teach your baby to read. Have a good time together. Enjoy the experience and let the baby learn at her own pace. But never give up and remember: little and often is one of the keys to being successful at anything instead of long work that becomes a chore. Before you know it, your baby will be reading fluently and enjoying one of life’s greatest pleasures.
