Just a 25 minute drive from the center of Rotorua on Trout Pool Road is the Okere Falls Scenic Reserve. With lush native New Zealand forest, trees abundant with native birds, sparkling waterfalls fringed with emerald green ferns, and the clean, flowing waters of the Kaituna River, the reserve is dazzling in its beauty.

For local Maori, the Okere Falls Reserve has significant historical, cultural and spiritual value. The Kaituna (Kai meaning food, tuna meaning eel) was and still is an important food source for the Ngati Pikiao, the traditional owners and caretakers of the river.

Abundant with trout, whitebait, koura (freshwater crayfish) and eels, the reserve’s fairytale setting belies the many violent battles that were fought along the Kaituna to protect this important food source. Behind the waterfalls in the reserve are caves where women and children hid from invading tribes, fearing for their lives. Now home to millions of fireflies, the caves are magical grottoes that delight young and old alike.

For thrill seekers, Okere Falls means whitewater thrills. The Kaituna River boasts the highest commercially rafting waterfall (7 meters) in the world. With three other waterfalls among the 14 rapids, this is truly an exhilarating whitewater ride.

Each year the store hosts a week-long German Beer Festival beginning in October on Labor weekend. This popular local event features lots of beer, sausages, and live music from a German-style omp band.
