Maximizing your small space

When considering how best to optimize the space in which you live or work, think of yourself as an artist, drawing on the adage “form follows function.” As a tiny home dweller, identify the purpose of your living or work area and implement a strategy that makes small spaces look and even feel larger. Some of the brightest and most talented interior designers and engineers can be found hard at work in the homes that are leading the way in today’s tiny home movement, using some general guidelines to create spaces that “open up” living and working areas.

The main objective is to design spacious spaces, even in the tightest corners of the house or office. One method to visually enlarge the proportions of a room is to reposition and repurpose furniture. Multipurpose furniture is used to accentuate the spaciousness while identifying the theme of each room, especially the living room, which is likely to be the largest room. For example, instead of a sofa, consider furnishing with a small L-shaped sectional, which can act as a room divider between the living room and dining room.

It is possible to create an illusion of spaciousness by using compact blinds that open easily to reveal windows – the more and larger windows, the better. High ceilings also add to this illusion, as do furniture that is simple and just the right size for the room. Overstuffed or “puffy” furniture is a big no-no, and dark, heavy fabrics should be avoided. Narrow and tall closets and storage cabinets can provide additional storage space without encroaching on the living space, a strategy known as “enclosed storage” which are places to keep clutter-causing items out of sight. Installing the right lighting can also save space, recessed lighting instead of lamps, which add to the clutter factor.

If there is a deck or patio, use that space to add to the living room and entertainment area. Invest in high-quality outdoor furniture and décor to make those areas comfortable and inviting whenever the weather permits. Custom furnishings and decor can extend your indoor theme to the outdoors, too. If possible, screen porches and patios to extend the season of outdoor living.

When it comes to painting, finish the walls with bright colors, which creates an airy and light feeling. It is also suggested that painting walls with big and bold patterns can maximize the impact of a room’s theme. For uneven or uneven walls, painting a horizontal stripe along the wall makes a small room appear larger. In fact, the strip distracts the eye from the uneven wall of the room.

Smart interior design can be used to make smaller homes not only satisfactorily available, avoiding the feeling of being crammed into a confined space. In the end, the small house is cozy and accommodating to the inhabitants and guests, making the small house the right size house.
