You probably already know that a pet is an important addition to the home of newlyweds. What you may not know is how much your pet can contribute to a perfect relationship. These are just some of the ways they make their contribution.

First, if you or your spouse come from an abusive background, you may find it difficult to touch and hold another human being.

My wife and I while caring for a homeless young man, who had been abused, we had a lot of trouble holding him until one day we went for a walk and brought home a stray cat.

He immediately warmed to Satchy. He picked her up and cradled her in her arms.

We had many hugs in our house from that day on.

Every married couple can benefit from the extra hugs that come from having a pet in the home.

Second, the tricks the pets do, like chasing a ball of yarn or throwing a rubber bone, make the relationship laugh. After all, we know the importance of the verse “a merry heart is good as medicine.”

It lightens the heaviest load and helps us divert attention from our challenges. And have a good laugh.

Third, for those of us who feel uncomfortable talking to ourselves in times of crisis, your pets can come to the rescue. They are among the best listeners on earth.
