Integrity Online – 3 Ways Plagiarism Can Quickly Ruin Your Reputation

Here to inspire great awareness about a possible epidemic

Showing integrity online is a virtue that many online users fail to take advantage of. In fact, you may be one of them or know someone. In most cases, especially in the last 5-10 years with scams and illegitimate businesses and business practices (Wall Street for example), integrity online seems like an oxymoron! Whether writing articles or providing other content such as forum comments, press releases and videos, at first glance, a lack of integrity online is a recurring and possible epidemic problem.

I believe this recurrence is due to the following two factors:

1. People are honestly “unaware” of the ethical etiquette of providing original content and fail to recognize the seriousness of taking someone else’s content and calling it your own.

2. People are blatantly “stealing” content from others so they don’t have to expend intellectual and physical energy creating their own valuable content.

This severe act damage process is known as Plagiarism.

It is not uncommon these days for a high school or college student to pay, sometimes a lot of money, for content like essays, reports, and research papers that are not of their own creation, in complete disregard of online integrity. In most educational systems such as a university, a student, teacher, professor can be expelled or fired for plagiarism and this can definitely affect one’s future resume when looking for another job.

So why does plagiarism seem to be the “norm” and seem to run rampant on the internet, while the use of online integrity is overlooked?

This particular topic came to my attention recently, which inspired me to address the topic of online integrity in this article. Therefore, in the realm of having integrity online and in the Self Mastery space, this article exists to Inspire People’s Abundant Awareness of the seriousness of Plagiarism and I pray that this article educates, inspires, transforms and literally “awakens to the people”. “to the severity of violating another person’s unique intellectual creativity.

Obviously, for this type of violation, national and international laws have been established for a long time. I believe that using integrity online and creating content requires a resolve to do the right thing. As Stan Toler said in his book, Minute Motivators For Leaders – Quick Inspiration For The Time Of Your Life,

‘If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well’ demands the old leadership adage. But character leaders for more concerned with doing the right thing of what they are in doing things right.

Because I believe in you, your worth as a human being, and your ability to create genuine, valuable content and possess integrity online, I implore you to discover the following 3 ways plagiarism can quickly ruin your reputation as someone you can trust. and turn him into someone ugly… someone that people disrespectfully mention in online chat rooms and on social media. And with this kind of technology available to everyone, your dishonest reputation will travel fast!

1. Losing people’s trust

one way Plagiarism can quickly ruin your honest reputation by discrediting any trust people may have in you. Now granted, people make bad decisions and costly mistakes in business and in life. We are all human and imperfect. Also, people can and do forgive and forget. Unfortunately, most do not forget and do not eliminate many errors by possessing integrity online and being dishonest with people, such as customers, losing faith and loyalty in what you have to do or say.

When you steal intellectual content (articles, comments, images, videos, etc.) from people, you also risk hurting them, not to mention possibly taking revenue from them because they trust to sell their content to a fair market. If your content is stolen and then distributed without your knowledge and permission, this could perhaps increase the price of the product.

So, make up your mind to always tell the truth, genuinely apologize for your mistakes, ask for forgiveness, use online integrity, and continually provide honest and relevant content with online integrity that becomes the solution people are looking for. You make sure that your “yes” means “yes” and your “no” means “no.” You do this to build trust and can rectify and reconcile any damaged relationships; therefore, earning himself some respect and loyalty.

2. Effect the validity of an honest brand

One second way Plagiarism can quickly ruin your honest reputation by depleting or diminishing the efforts, effects, and validity of an honest brand. When you brand yourself, You, Inc., should rate yourself as an entrepreneur of value, respect, honesty, and compassion. This goes with everything from graphics to written content. Remember to use integrity online, make sure it’s your property or content you’ve created and/or paid for properly.

So, resolve to always run a “clean” brand campaign, showing your “true” colors, and build your brand on the core value of integrity. This act of honesty will provide some purpose and validity to your cause and course of action. A dishonest “brand” is not attractive and no one is attracted to this type of business or lifestyle. People who have or campaign for a dishonest “brand” always lose in the end!

3. Losing your position as a valuable resource

a third way Plagiarism can quickly ruin your honest reputation by losing your ability to become a legitimate business owner or remain a trusted and honorable resource for useful content. If your content is mostly stolen and it’s not yours, you will eventually lose the “right” to provide quality and valuable content. There may be value in the content itself; however, people will choose to look elsewhere for their solutions or take their business and money to another business that is more trustworthy.

Therefore, please make the decision never to steal someone else’s content. Valuable or not, it’s not your own content! Being honest is online integrity at its best! When you want to use another creator’s content, just ask permission to do so. When quoting, use your name. When it is obvious that you have paraphrased content, the tag is to locate the author. It is always better to be overly cautious than to become guilty of plagiarism.

words of caution

below are 4 ways can determine if the content has been plagiarized. However, it is only a guide and not always the “rule of thumb”.

  1. Similar amount of word count (rarely not with identical themes, but not uncommon)
  2. Similar “tone” of the article (understood if the content is on the same topic)
  3. Similar structure:
  4. a) Identical format to clarify sentences and paragraphs
  5. b) Identical format for key points and interests
  6. Too many word-for-word sentences (means SERIOUS plagiarism is involved!)

Keep in mind: Perceptions, concepts, and perspectives are common and allowed in writing. However, not word for word. If word for word is needed to get a point or idea across to your readers, use the Citation Formatting Tool and tell readers who made a statement. If the statement was yours, then they will have to subpoena you.
