Frugal travel tips for Seville, Spain

Seville is one of the most beautiful cities in all of Spain, full of squares and history. One of the highlights of Seville, the Alcázar, a former Islamic palace, is well worth the pricey entrance. To offset that expense, there are a number of free sights to see, including the other must-see, the Seville Cathedral with its free admission on Sundays.

Seville Cathedral with the Giralda on Sunday

Normally, the Seville Cathedral with the Giralda charges a high entrance fee. When I went, I paid the fee and did not envy the expense. One of the few cathedrals with private rooms open to the public and a tower that dominates almost all of old Seville (the tower ramp, instead of stairs, allowed ancestors to ride horses instead of walking), it is a from the main attractions of Seville.

However, if you plan your trip well and are in Seville on a Sunday, the entrance fee is not charged. Yes, its free.

Spain Square

Any true Star Wars fan will recognize the Spanish Steps as George Lucas’s inspiration for the Naboo Palace. Any other traveler will simply appreciate it as an example of beautiful architecture. The tile work covers every inch, including the multiple bridges. Along the base of the buildings, there is a contribution from each province, illustrating a significant historical event in mosaic.

Entrance to the square is free.

Torre del Oro on Tuesdays

The Torre del Oro or Golden Tower was exactly that, a 13th century tower covered in golden tiles. It now houses a maritime museum. There is normally an admission fee, but on Tuesdays, this fee does not apply.

El Alamillo Bridge

For those looking for a more modern architecture, El Alamillo offers a perfect example. A huge bridge that connects the island of La Cartuja with the old town of Seville, El Alamillo is primarily a bridge for vehicles. However, in the center there is an elevated pedestrian walkway.

There are many pedestrian walkways in Seville, perfect for people watching and filled with artists and street performers.

Royal Tobacco Factory

This old tobacco factory was built more than 500 years ago and made famous by Bizet’s opera Carmen. He once had a moat and a jail. It is now a university building, it is open and free for all travelers. Inside, frugal visitors can find cheap and inexpensive college food and drinks.

It is impossible to say that you have seen Spain without seeing Seville. Seville, a beautiful and walkable city, is also a paradise for frugal travelers.
