Amazing areas to visit on the beautiful island of Zanzibar

Zanzibar is an archipelago off the east coast of Africa. Its main neighboring island is Pemba, but there are also many smaller islands, such as Mnemba and Uzi, which are surrounded by the Indian Ocean.

Although Zanzibar is not a huge island, it has many different types of towns that have totally different atmospheres, environments, and landscapes from each other.

The content of this article should give you a brief introduction to three very different areas of the island and some ideas of things to see and do there.

Stone city

Zanzibar Town, also known as Stone Town, is the ancient city that is made up of long, winding and thin alleyways, mosques, bazaars and grand wooden doors with magnificently carved brass studs. During your stay in Stone Town, you might want to take a look at some of the amazing architecture available such as the house of wonders, the people’s palace, and the market building.

Stone Town has many lively and energetic markets that are ideal for general and grocery shopping. Darajani market sells things like meats, spices, vegetables, jewelry, and cloth. For fresh fish visit the fish market, where you will see all kinds of fresh catches such as squid, octopus, prawns, red snapper, barracuda, tuna and swordfish.

There are many restaurants to eat in Stone Town, including Indian and Italian places, as well as traditional food places. However, for a great dining experience, I recommend visiting the Forodhani Gardens Food Market at night and eating there. You’ll see stalls selling all kinds of fish, meat, and vegetables, as well as some local delicacies such as Zanzibar pizza and sugarcane juice to go with it.

Pay

The small coastal town of Paje is a quiet place, where my main advice is to kick back and relax on the beach. You can also see how the seaweed is harvested at low tide, the locals use stakes to catch the seaweed which is then dried and exported.

nungwi

Nungwi is simply a beach lover’s paradise. Whether you like to sunbathe, swim, snorkel, snorkel or fish, Nungwi has it all. You can even try water sports like sea kayaking or windsurfing and end the day with a sunset cruise on a traditional local dhow. There are also some natural aquariums in this area where you can see marine life, such as caring for baby sea turtles.
